3 Clean DIY Hand Sanitizers That Will Keep You Protected
Hand sanitizers are a hot commodity these days, and can be found in almost every store you go to, at the ends of at least two aisles. One of the problems with these sanitizers is that they kill all bacteria, including the good microbes, which is one of the ways we get antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or “super bugs”. It also weakens our immune systems, which makes this one of those vicious cycles.
And with how much sanitizer we’re using these days, are your hands feeling dry and painful? No surprise, considering there’s a whole lot of ingredients that I either can’t pronounce or have numbers in the name.
So why don’t we take a look at some homemade hand sanitizers that won’t break the bank, immune systems, or hands…
#1: Coconut Oil and Oregano
Directions:
Mix 10 drops of oregano oil and 2 tbsp fractionated coconut oil in a jar.
Why this works:
Oregano has disinfectant and antibacterial properties.
Coconut oil is antibacterial, anti-aging, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Oh, and it moisturizes and soothes the skin.
#2: Aloe Vera and Rubbing Alcohol
Directions:
Mix 2/3 cup of 99% rubbing alcohol and 1/3 cup pure aloe vera gel in a small bowl until combined. (Add 50 drops of your choice of essential oil if you want to use some after you’ve mixed the first two ingredients.) Store in a small mason jar or squeeze bottle.
Why this works:
Aloe vera is a skin-soother, as I’m sure we all know, but it is also an antimicrobial.
Rubbing alcohol is a disinfectant, antimicrobial, and antiseptic, but it can make your skin quite dry.
#3: Witch Hazel and Essential Oil Spray
Directions:
Mix 3 oz. witch hazel (you can also use rubbing alcohol instead; use less essential oil if you use rubbing alcohol), 2 tbsp pure aloe vera, and 15-20 drops of an essential oil (Lavender and tea tree, geranium, lemongrass) in a spray bottle.
Why this works:
Witch hazel has powerful antiseptic and antibacterial properties and is also useful as a skin toner!
